Signs of Heat Illness

Heat illness can manifest in several ways, ranging from mild to severe symptoms. Here are some common signs to watch out for:

1. Heat Cramps: These are often the first sign of heat illness and typically involve painful muscle cramps or spasms, usually in the legs or abdomen.

2. Heat Exhaustion: This is a more serious condition that can develop if heat cramps are left untreated. Signs of heat exhaustion include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Cool, moist skin with goosebumps, despite the heat
  • Muscle cramps
  • Rapid heartbeat

3. Heat Stroke: Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment. Signs of heat stroke include:

  •    Extremely high body temperature (above 103°F or 40°C)
  •    Absence of sweating, with hot, dry skin
  •    Rapid pulse
  •    Difficulty breathing
  •    Confusion, agitation, or altered mental state
  •    Seizures
  •    Loss of consciousness

If you or someone else exhibits signs of heat illness, it's crucial to take action immediately. Move to a cooler place, hydrate with water or a sports drink (avoid caffeine and alcohol), loosen clothing, and apply cool compresses or take a cool bath if possible. Seek medical attention promptly, especially if the symptoms worsen or if heat stroke is suspected.
